UserLand Software Acquires TLS from Macrobyte Resources

DANVILLE, CA -- October 19, 2004 -- UserLand Software is pleased to announce that it has acquired TLS, secure web client/server software originally implemented for UserLand's platform by Macrobyte Resources. TLS, which stands for "Transport Layer Security," is the industry standard for securing web communications. UserLand's TLS will provide companies and individuals deploying UserLand's products with a means of ensuring that their communications over the Internet will remain secure and private.

TLS version 0.3.1 fixes several related bugs in the secure webserver, where the server would not acknowledge situations in which the client cancelled the SSL/TLS session.

The most common occurrence of this situation is when the client browser displays a warning that the secure site is not fully trusted, and the user opts to cancel. Previously, the listening thread would remain alive on the server, but would not be useful, and in some situations could cause an apparently deaf server. In this release, an aborted connection is properly cancelled.

This may be the final release before TLS 1.0.

TLS 0.3 Released

The TLS server is now available for use in production environments. The software no longer has an expiration date and includes several bug fixes from the 0.2.x series. See tls.macrobyte.net/releases/0.3 for more details and the download links.

Transport Layer Security version 0.2.2 is available for Frontier and Radio UserLand, running on MacOS Classic, MacOS X, and Windows.

Changes

Changes to this version (since 0.2.1) include:

• New script for specifying additional certificates to serve as the certificate chain. See tls.httpsServer.useExtraCertificate
• Serves the certificate chain (as specified above) for the site's certificate
• New script for clearing the certificate chain from the DLL. See tls.httpsServer.clearExtraCertificates

TLS 0.2.1 has been released. Changes since 0.1 include:

• Generate self-signed certificates, private key files, and certificate signing requests with scripts (no need to use 3rd party or command-line tools).
