★ Brooklyn Museum: ‘Life, Death and Transformation in the Americas’ (continuing) For generations, one of the first things visitors to Brooklyn Museum encountered was the Hall of the Americas, the two-story rotunda right off the main lobby. And when you were in it, you knew you were home. A few years ago during renovations, the museum put the Americas material in storage, but now it’s back in new galleries on the fifth floor. LIC Artist Opens New Studio With Low-Key Vibe

By amol on February 15, 2013

LONG ISLAND CITY — Eduardo Anievas isn’t one for stuffy gallery openings.

The Long Island City artist says he always found the best way to sell his art was through word of mouth and his own personal connections, rather than conventional art world-routes.

“I hate openings…it’s not my thing,” Anievas said recently, as he stood in his 48th Avenue studio wearing paint-splattered clothes, flanked by dozens of his brightly-colored pieces.

“My experience through the years is that most of the money that I make painting, for me — it hasn’t been through galleries.”

Now, the 39-year-old painter is taking that casual approach to his new studio, at 10-15 48th Ave. just off of Vernon Boulevard, which serves as both a work site and his own gallery.

Anievas has set public hours every Saturday afternoon, and the rest of the time he has an open-door policy — if he happens to be

Republican mayoral hopeful John Catsimatidis visited Queens Plaza last week to demand the MTA halt work on the No. 7 train for the weekends of the Lunar New Year.

“Why are they abusing the Asians and not respecting them?” Catsimatidis asked. “They’re not showing respect for half a million people in the outerboroughs.”

Catsimatidis was the latest politician to protest the Metropolitan Transportation Authority’s decision to shut down the No. 7 train between Times Square and Queensborough Plaza for 13 consecutive weekends for ongoing work on the Queens artery’s signal system.

The MTA says when complete the new system, known as Communications Based Train Control, will increase safety, decrease maintenance and

LIC’s Historic Waterfront Crab House Opens for First Time Since Sandy

By amol on February 14, 2013

LONG ISLAND CITY — A major fire and a devastating flood weren’t enough to keep the Waterfront Crab House down.

The landmark Long Island City eatery reopened this week after it was destroyed by several feet of water during Hurricane Sandy — the second major disaster in the last few years at the restaurant, which was shut down for five months in 2009 after a fire.

“When this happened, it was sort of like, okay — again?” said Kris Mazzarella, whose father Tony Mazzarella opened the Waterfront Crab House at 2-03 Borden Ave. 36 years ago.

But when the October storm hit, it was less devastating than expected, she said, since the fire had already forced them through the rebuilding experience once before.

“We had done this before. We knew the steps that we were going to have to take,” Mazzarella said.

“We never took the victim mentality, like ‘Why is

Artist Eduardo Anievas moves into LIC

By amol on February 14, 2013

Watch out artists, the competition heats up. But seriously, a pretty cool, successful artist just entered the hood and will be having regular open houses. // Painter Eduardo Anievas recently relocated his studio to an accessible space located at 10-15 48th Avenue, between Vernon Blvd and 11th Street. His new studio functions as a gallery as well as a working space and features two windows at street level. Eduardo’s studio is open to the public every Saturday from 1pm-6pm. Additionally, Eduardo is at his studio quite often and has an open door policy- he welcomes passersby to come in whenever he is there. Eduardo is warm and encouraging and those who walk in to see his paintings, have a chat or purchase some art enjoy the rare opportunity to visit with an artist in his workplace. He has 60 paintings on display and the rest of his available pieces in a digital portfolio. All are within an affordable price range; from $100 to $2000, while commissioned pieces cost up to $5,000 or more for large-scale works like murals. Eduardo Anievas is originally from Santander, a city in Northern Spain. He left his country at age 23 and began to work as a full time artist, primarily with portraits and still lives, in Germany and Portugal before moving to NY where he has spent the last 14 years. Eduardo has displayed his works at many different venues including commercial and nonprofit galleries in Europe (Spain, Germany, Portugal, Bulgaria) and the US, restaurants, cafes, on the streets of Manhattan, and once on a school bus as part of the 2012 Bushwick Open Studios. Anievas moved his studio to a loft in LIC in 2010 after living and painting in Williamsburg, Brooklyn for 11 years. After participating in the LIC Arts Open Festival in May 2011, Eduardo began a series of open studio events which he and his wife, Elizabeth, hosted every six weeks until July 2012. The ‘Open Studio Series’ events were lively and familiar; guests indulged in free sangria and tapas, live music and 100 of Eduardo’s paintings on display. The events introduced Anievas to LIC and added many locals to his clientele. In the past year, Eduardo has had solo exhibitions of his paintings at Ten10 Studios, the SMP Building, and several shops on Vernon Boulevard in addition to solo and group shows at gallery and alternative venues in Riverdale, Rye, Bushwick, and Williamsburg. In September he completed a 17’ x 8’ mural for a new restaurant, Casa Pomona, on the Upper West Side. Although Eduardo’s paintings are easily recognizable, his works have a strong range of styles and approach many varied subjects including nudes, cityscapes, people walking on the streets of NYC, portraits, and still lives. Eduardo’s primary focus as a painter is on using negative space and geometry to explore the interplay between figure and background. His bold colors and dynamic geometries make for vibrant works of art. A wide range of emotions emanate from his paintings- his walking series of pedestrians exude a distant loneliness, his nudes are cool and sensual and his still lives of nature pulse with vitality. His portraits display his exceptional skills with realism and traditional techniques. His website is www.eduaran.com Open hours: Saturdays 1-6pm and by appointment or by chance Studio Address: 10-15 48th Avenue between Vernon Boulevard and 11thStreet, Long Island City, NY 11101 Subway directions: 1st stop in Queens on the 7, E, M, and G trains;www.eduardoanievas.com/contact.html

More single people live in these nabes than anywhere in the city

If you’re a guy looking for love this Valentine’s Day, you should search on the Upper East Side. And if you’re a lady, head to Long Island City to find a man.

On the Upper East Side, there are nearly two single women for every one man, according to census data crunched by real estate website trulia.com. In Long Island City, there are 1.42 men for every single woman.

Generally, “women tend to live in more upscale, residential neighborhoods,” said Jed Kolko, the author of the study called “Finding Love In All the Right Places.” “Men flock in downtown areas that are more convenient to their work places.”

Overall, there are

Bar Fundraiser Thanks British Rockers The Who for Sandy Help

By amol on February 12, 2013

LONG ISLAND CITY — You can call it rock star karma.

A Queens bar and music venue that got a helping hand from British rockers The Who after Hurricane Sandy is returning the favor, hosting a fundraising concert for the band’s favorite charity.

LIC Bar, at 45-58 Vernon Blvd. in Long Island City, was hit hard by flooding during the October storm. Much of its sound equipment was destroyed.

In an effort to help out, bar regular Robert Basch contacted the management team of The Who, which he’d recently seen in concert.

“I said, ‘You know what, let me reach out to The Who, maybe they’ll help us out,”’ Basch recalled. “I was surprised a couple of days later they sent an email back saying yes.”

The band donated replacement amps and microphones, helping LIC Bar get back to its regular line-up of live music shows. Soon after, well-known The Who tribute

Department fines crane operator in LIC collapse

By Rebecca Henely

TimesLedger Newspapers

The city Department of Buildings issued $132,800 in fines last week to the operator, site safety manager and property owner in a January Long Island City crane collapse.

“Cranes are complex pieces of equipment that serve as the driving force of any major construction project,” DOB Commissioner Robert LiMandri said in a statement. “They must be properly operated and maintained, and when that fails to occur, there can be serious consequences.”

The accident, which left seven workers injured, occurred Jan. 9 at a construction site at 46-10 Center Blvd. behind Long Island City’s iconic Pepsi-Cola sign. The DOB later said it discovered through a preliminary investigation that the crane operator, Paul Greer, had tried to lift 23,900 pounds with the 15-foot mobile boom crane, which is more than

Tony Bennett might have left his heart in San Francisco, but the Astoria native would be very impressed by the wide array of romantic activities on Valentine’s Day in Queens this year.

Feb. 14, afroTango (special Valentine’s Day performance), 8pm. A world premiere with music arranged and directed by Latin Grammy winner Raul Jaurena, followed by a wine and tapas reception with the stars of the show. $35. The Gowanus Dredgers Club, which is affiliated with the LIC Community Boathouse, is in litigation with the boathouse’s founder.

By Rebecca Henely

TimesLedger Newspapers

A lawsuit over a Facebook Web page is putting the current leaders of the Long Island City Community Boathouse at odds with its founder.

The Gowanus Dredgers Canoe Club, a nonprofit based in Brooklyn that is affiliated with the boathouse, levied a suit in Brooklyn federal court in 2011 against Erik Baard, who founded the boathouse in 2004. The boathouse, at 46-01 5th St., offers recreational and educational paddling programs along the East River.

The dispute emerged after Baard created a Facebook fan page for the boathouse in 2009 after he stepped down from the boathouse’s leadership in 2008. Jerry Dunne, an attorney for the Dredgers, said in an e-mail that the fan page is copyright infringement.

“Erik has no longer any
