Welcome! This portal provides access to a special data set produced for the Year of Tropical Convection (YOTC). Specifically, it contains convection and cloud related A-Train satellite values collocated to CloudSat footprints for the period May 2008 to April 2010. Products include quantities from Calipso, MLS, AIRS, AMSR-E, CERES, MODIS and a number of fields from the specialized YOTC analysis produced by ECMWF. For more details about YOTC, please refer to www.ucar.edu/yotc. For more details about this data set, please refer to the Data Documentation link above.
YOTC Synopsis: The realistic representation of tropical convection in our global atmospheric models is a
long-standing grand challenge for numerical weather forecasts and global climate predictions. Our lack of
fundamental knowledge and practical capabilities in this area leaves us disadvantaged in modeling and
predicting prominent phenomena of the tropical atmosphere such as the ITCZ, ENSO, monsoons and their
active/break periods, the MJO, subtropical stratus decks, near-surface ocean properties, tropical cyclones,
and even the diurnal cycle.
