U.S. citizenship documents needed for a Social Security card

We can accept only certain documents as proof of U.S. citizenship. These include:

  • U.S. birth certificate;
  • U.S. Consular Report of Birth Abroad;
  • U.S. passport;
  • Certificate of Naturalization; or
  • Certificate of Citizenship.  

All documents must be either originals or certified copies by the issuing agency. We do not accept photocopies or notarized copies.
