Welcome to the Solid State Storage Initiative (SSSI), formed to foster the growth and success of the market for solid state storage in both enterprise and client environments.

Why Solid State Storage?
Data storage made from silicon chips (instead of spinning metal platters or streaming tape) is called solid state storage. By accessing data directly from RAM or Flash chips, enterprise-grade solid state storage can achieve input and output data rates far greater than conventional, magnetic storage devices such as hard disk drives.

Solid State Storage Performance Test Specification (SSS PTS)
Until recently, there had been no widely accepted test methodology for measuring SSD performance. So each SSD manufacturer utilized different measurement methodologies to derive performance specifications for their products. Thus it’s been difficult for buyers to fairly compare the performance specifications of SSDs from different manufacturers. The SSS PTS defines a suite of tests and test methodologies to measure the performance characteristics of SSDs. The SSS PTS provides performance measurements that may be fairly compared to those of other SSDs measured the same way in the same environment.

The SSS PTS consists of two separate, precisely targeted specifications for Enterprise and Client.  The specifications are available here.
