Sign-Up

Now recruiting volunteers in the Denver/Aurora area for the 2012-2013 school year!

Early literacy impacts all aspects of a child's life from academic performance across subject areas to self-confidence and enthusiasm for learning. A child's third grade reading scores can predict with 70% accuracy the likelihood they will graduate from high school. The power of your one-on-one attention and caring can make an incredible difference.

Reading Partners provides an opportunity and a space for volunteers from the community to give a fraction of their time each week to tutor an elementary school student one-on-one in reading using a structured and easy-to-follow curriculum.

With just 1 hour a week, you can make a huge difference in the lives of children who have fallen behind in reading and are at risk of falling further. One-on-one instruction at the student's reading level provides the opportunity for individualized academic attention and a healthy learning relationship with you, the volunteer. Volunteers are, in turn, supported at all times by Reading Partners school site coordinators and staff.

Tutoring will begin in early September 2012. We encourage interested volunteers to sign up through our website, as we will be emailing reminders and updates to potential tutors over the summer.

Pick any 1-hour time slot that's convenient for you between 9am and 5pm, Monday through Thursday (you are welcome to help more if able).

For more information or to register to volunteer, visit readingpartners.org/volunteer.

+  Centaurus High School Math Tutors

Sign-Up

Are you good at math and like working with teenagers? If so, Colorado Youth for a Change (CYC) is the organization for you. We are looking for tutors to help students like Manny: CYC Educational Intervention Coordinator, Erica Legrand, began working with 16 year old Manny during the 2011 fall semester at Centaurus High School in Boulder Valley School District. Manny has been disengaged in school since his freshman year. This student’s social environments were plagued with negative influences such as street gangs and disruptive behaviors. Throughout the semester, this sophomore student maintained a failing average of 20 percent in his Literature class due to struggles with reading and writing. Erica and Manny’s Academic Support Teacher noticed those barriers and began to advocate for Manny. Fueled by their support, Manny became encouraged and was determined to rise to the challenge. Not only did Manny finish the semester with a 75 percent average in his Literature class, but he received a grade of "C" or better in all of his courses. Today, Manny is re-engaged in school and is making plans for a life of success. His career goal is to become a computer engineer. Academically motivated, Manny is enrolled in an engineering class and is performing well. Please help Colorado Youth for a Change to continue to help youth like Manny (ages 14-18) through tutoring in core subjects such as math. High School tutors are needed Tuesdays and Thursdays from 3 p.m. to 4:30 p.m. and Wednesdays from 7:30 a.m. to 8:30 a.m. at Centaurus High School in Lafayette Colorado. Volunteers are committed to doing one hour a day, at least one day per week until 5/23/2012 (end of the school year).

As a short term volunteer you would not only be supporting the activity programs, but also the Future Options program, the Parent to Parent program, and possible administrative programs as well.

Volunteer needs include: • Transportation Assistants – One of the biggest barriers for students to participate in our activities is simply getting to/from them. We are seeking caring individuals with reliable transportation and a safe driving record to help transport students to/from activities.

• Activities Helper – We are always looking for individuals to help plan / set-up / run / clean-up the activities that are offered. Times and locations vary depending on the activity.

•Parent 2 Parent Program- The purpose is to empower and educate the parents of our students on the importance of and how to be engaged in the education of their son/daughter.

We need: •Transportation Assistants – One of the biggest barriers for families to participate in these meetings is simply getting to/from them. We are seeking caring individuals with reliable transportation and a safe driving record that would help to transport one or more parents and possibly their children if they don’t have access to childcare to/from these local area meetings.

• Childcare Activities Planner/Leader – Many of our parents who attend our Parent to Parent meetings have limited access to childcare and so must bring their children with them to meetings. The children range in age from toddlers to high school students. We are seeking caring individuals who would be willing to supervise and plan activities for the children while their parents participate in the meeting. Activities could include sports, crafts, games, etc.

•Tutoring/Homework Helper – For our school age students who have to attend the meetings with their parents, we would love to offer them opportunities to get help with homework and assistance with subjects in which they may struggle.
