Nora Azzawi
Political Science Major

After graduating from high school in Pomona, Nora Azzawi knew she was going to college and knew she was going to Mt. SAC.

“I knew that Mt. SAC had a reputation as one of the best community colleges in the state, and I knew that I wanted to come here,” says Nora.

One of the main selling points for Nora was the abundance of opportunities at Mt. SAC to get involved in campus life. The 19-year-old sophomore currently serves as an Associated Students senator in the campus student government.

“I had participated in student government in high school,” she says.  “And in choosing a college, I knew that I wanted to get involved in extracurricular activities. Mt. SAC was the place to do that.”

Nora also took advantage of the various support services offered by the college, including counseling and the Aspire Program, which fosters the academic achievement of African-American and other students.

“When I came to Mt. SAC, I didn’t know what to do, but counseling walked me through the steps,” says Nora. “And the Aspire program was a big part of my introduction to the college. It’s what made my transition to college easier.”

Going forward, Nora hopes to join Mt. SAC’s Honors Program, one of the state’s top academically accelerated programs.  And she wants to transfer to UCLA to major in international development studies.

“I love Mt. SAC!” she says, beaming. “We are just the best at everything we do here. Some people think it’s ‘just’ a community college, but it’s much more than that.”
