4. About destination cities

  1. Can I use airport codes instead of city names?

Yes. When you use the IATA airport code, Dopplr recognises this and adds the nearest big city. For example, a trip to SFO will show up as San Francisco, and CDG becomes a trip to Paris.

  2. Why does a city name I'm putting in the destination field automatically change to something else?

If Dopplr doesn't recognise the city, we check the location from Google's geocoder and receive a point in the world. This point is then compared to the destinations that we do have in our database, and we pull out a city or town that is known to be near the original suggestion.

Another reason for this to happen is the fact that we pull our locations from the geonames.org project. Sometimes Geonames has multiple names for one destination, and the name they have as primary might differ from the original suggestion.

  3. Why can't I use the name of a larger area than just a city as my destination, such as a region, territory, island or country?

The main purpose of Dopplr is serendipitous coincidences. These only become apparent when you are fairly specific about the destinations you are visiting. So we'd encourage you to try adding the names of towns or cities you're going to. However, we can consider adding it if it's a popular destination. Contact us via the feedback form.

  4. What if Dopplr doesn't recognise the destination I want to travel to?

Dopplr includes most cities that people want to travel to. Remember that Dopplr is built around trips to cities and towns, and not for example to islands, states or countries. However, if the city you're going to is missing, please let us know via the feedback form and we'll try to add it for you. We can only add destinations that are included in the Geonames database and listed as "populated place".
