Start a Course

Interested in starting a course? Great. You’ll find that it’s a lot easier than you’d think. Here’s some important stuff to think about:

  • Get a faculty sponsor on board as soon as possible.
  • Finish your paperwork as soon as possible. Some departments have earlier deadlines, as early as the 5th week of the preceding semester! (e.g. if you want to facilitate in the Spring, finish your paperwork by October!)
  • The university hired someone to help you develop your DeCal; use UCFTR for help with finding a faculty sponsor, writing a syllabus, forming lesson plans, etc. Again, the UC is paying someone to help you - so use this valuable resource!
  • You don’t have to be an expert in the subject! You’re a facilitator; you’re there to facilitate discussion, not to lecture your peers.

Ready? Of course you are!

Now, it’s just Seven Steps to start your own DeCal.
