1. IPM Surveys

Listed below are the main accomplishments of the GLVWG during the first two years as specified in the grant funded by NCR IPM Center.  The initial project involves developing an IPM Vegetable Adoption Surveys for key crops in the region.  IPM information gleaned from the surveys will be distributed back to states and stakeholders, and form the basis of future educational or research programs or projects.

IPM Vegetable Surveys (July, 2007)

  • A Project Committee composed 12 university specialists plus 5 additional stakeholders (growers & industry representatives) met October 27th-28th, 2005 in Chesterton, IN to create 14 vegetable IPM adoption surveys.
  • Those surveys were distributed electronically on Surveymonkey.com beginning January, 2006.
  • The surveys were closed May, 2007.
  • Based on grower response, 9 of the 14 surveys are being analyzed for IPM adoption practices, see the table below for current results and status.

2. Corn Earworm Monitoring and Resistance Network

GLVWG members from nearly every state assisted in monitoring CEW in support of the NC IPM Center funded project.  The goals of this project are to track migrating flights of adults into the midwest for both timing and treatment recommendations as well as resistance testing. Updates of this project were made by Bill Hutchison via the VegEdge newsletter.

Visit Dr. Hutchison's web only newsletter for more details or visit the trapping website directly.

3. Cucurbit IPM Program Development for Great Lakes Expo (2007)

At the 2007 annual meeting, a Project Committee was formed to undertake developing a Cucurbit IPM program at the 2007 Great Lakes Expo in Michigan. Although not focusing exclusively on pumpkin, this program stems from the steady focus we have had within the WG on cucurbits in addition to the region wide pumpkin IPM survey which identified additional IPM training as a high priority. The program was designed initially as a set of 4 disciplines (weed science, pathology, entomology, etc) each containing 1.5 hours of programming. This is subject to change pending further discussions and decisions of the committee. Please contact committee Chair Elaine Roddy (OMAFRA) for any questions related to the program.

Look for this committee to develop and communicate a timeline of activities to be accomplished leading up to the Expo, with possible requests for specific help in program planning. Two reasons for holding this program at the Great Lakes Expo include it is an early meeting with traditionally high attendance, plus we intend to package the information presented in such a way as to be used in other statewide vegetable congresses or schools.

The following cucurbit IPM presentations were made at the 2007 Great Lakes Expo.  You can watch them online or request a copy of the DVD from Jim Jasinski while supplies last.

4. Sweet corn IPM Workshop for Great Lakes Expo (2008) & DVD

For the second year in a row, we developed an IPM workshop for the 2008 Great Lakes Fruit and Vegetable Exposition in Michigan. The 2008 workshop will be held in December, and is focused on sweet corn. Members of the GLVWG gave six of the nine presentations. In addition to the live presentations, we created 1,000 DVD’s and an online version of the sweet corn IPM workshop presentations to be distributed free to growers and IPM Coordinators around the region.

The following sweet corn IPM presentations were made at the 2008 Great Lakes Expo.  You can watch them online or request a copy of the DVD from Jim Jasinski while supplies last.

5. Sweet Corn Pest Identification and Management pocket guide (2008)

We will also be distributing the newly pressed “Sweet Corn Pest Management and Identification” pocket guide at the Great Lakes Expo to growers who complete the sweet corn IPM survey. The pocket guide is 104 pages of text and color images, and is being sold by Purdue University for $10. We wrote a mini-grant to support the bulk of printing costs, and were able to produce 3,300 copies. In addition to those given out at the Great Lakes Expo, 200 pocket guides will be sent to each state’s IPM coordinator and Ontario, Canada for distribution to growers. We encourage the exchange of a completed sweet corn IPM survey for a pocket guide.

6. Heirloom Tomato Multi-Site Demonstration Trial (2009)

The GLVWG is coordinating an Heirloom Tomato Evaluation Demonstration trial at 16 locations around the region.  The goals of this demonstration are to determine how a variety performs with respect to insect and disease pressure from the northern to southern range of the region. Preliminary yield and fruit quality data will also be taken for each variety.  Along with this information, sensory data such as cosmetic appeal and taste preference will be collected for each of the ten varieties.  Photographs of the plants and fruit, both whole and sliced, will be taken.  This data will then collated into a single publication available for growers to use in terms of selecting varieties that are likely to be successful in their market location.
