Spend your first semester at Oxy in an integrated set of courses built around outings to the surrounding immigrant communities.

Be one of 32 students and three faculty members learning about education, literature, sociology, California, and immigration. The many immigrant communities of Los Angeles will serve as intellectual resources that will work in dialogic relation to classroom learning.

This semester is a unique opportunity to fulfill three requirements toward graduation (a Core writing requirement, the United States Core requirement, and the Intercultural Core requirement) and elective courses for three majors (critical theory and social justice, sociology, and Spanish). The prerequisites for this combined set of courses are a curiosity for learning about California's cultures, a willingness to visit and learn from immigrant communities, a fondness for films and documentaries, and the enthusiasm and patience to work with children. We are committed to accommodating students regardless of prior experience; field trip expenses will be paid by the College.

Lecture/Discussion: Focused on the literary works and histories of immigrant communities throughout California, the social forces impacting those communities, and writing skills and strategies.

Social Science Field Component: Observations and participatory social inquiry at Annandale Elementary School.

Field Trips: Outings to museums and historic immigrant communities around Los Angeles.

The CIS Experience: What do last year’s California Immigration Semester (CIS) students think of their CIS experience?
