Since the conclusion of the 2011 Experience API BAA (Nicknamed “Project Tin Can”), ADL has been busy paving the way forward for what will be the Experience API (Tin Can API) specification. We’ve researched activity streams and we’ve expanded our collaboration capabilities.
We’ve re-combined the outputs of the 2011 ADL BAA, Project Tin Can, into specific goals for the next generation of SCORM.
We’ve reworked some of the delivered Experience API (Tin Can API) specification into what we feel is a simpler framework, but one that also meets the expanding needs of distributed learning. Efforts thus far have been focused in the sections on verbs and activities. We will be putting out a modification of the original delivered specification with these changes shortly.
We need your help! Many have signed up through the original BAA and we are continuing that effort. If you are interested in monitoring or assisting in creating the Experience API (Tin Can API), please sign up.

What is the Experience API (Tin Can API)?
A simple, lightweight way for any permitted actor to store and retrieve extensible learning records, learner and learning experience profiles, regardless of the platform used between any type of learning experience and a Learning Record Store
How is the Learning Record Store different from a Learning Management System (LMS)?
An LRS stores information about a learner’s experience in content. It is a tracking system that could be incorporated into an LMS. It is a subset of what typically defines an LMS – user management, content delivery, tracking, sequencing, curriculum management, etc.
What benefits does the Experience API (Tin Can API) provide?
People learn, explore, and interact with the world in many different ways. And methods of tracking these experiences are quickly being developed and aligned to meet the needs of social web sites and applications. Likewise, learning content and activities come in many forms, not just web based lessons delivered through a web browser. The TinCan API is one piece of ADL’s effort to leverage these emerging solutions and provide a rich platform on which to build dynamic, diverse and engaging content without the constraints previously imposed by SCORM and earlier learning specifications.
What community requirements does the Experience API (Tin Can API) address?
Through a Broad Agency Announcement (BAA) in 2011, ADL solicited feature requests and use cases from learning professionals in the public and private sector via a crowdsourcing tool ‘UserVoice’ and had the participants vote the most important features to the top. In addition, many one-on-one interviews and a literature review of over 100 Learning-Education-Training Systems Interoperability (LETSI) whitepapers on ‘SCORM 2.0’. ADL has summarized the requirements on our website.
Where can I view the current draft of the Experience API (Tin Can API) Specification?
The initial draft version of the spec can be found here.
The set of verbs in the Experience API (Tin Can API) specification is too limited for my needs. Can I use my own verbs?
The verb and activity definitions can be defined by the learning experience as needed to fully describe the interactions and data needed for the resulting assessment. For examples of how this may work, please see this post.
How can I contribute to the ongoing development of the Experience API (Tin Can API) specification?
Yes. We are currently working with the community to develop a 1.0 version of the specification. You can find more information about this effort at www.adlnet.gov/adl-next-generation-scorm-kickoff-meeting.
