We are happy to announce that Allegheny County Common Pleas Judge Joseph James has ruled that the Pittsburgh City's Billboard Ordinance was justly enacted, denying Lamar Advertising's claims that minor changes made to the bill before the Dec. 19th final vote violated state law.
City Council President Darlene Harris is thrilled to count this as another victory for the forces of scenic preservation in the region.

NHL Lockout Hurts Pittsburgh
I received a response from Mr. Donald Fehr, Executive Director of Players Association: The full letter from Donald Fehr can be found here. He shares our frustration and concern with the owners’ decision to lockout the players, cancel the preseason and now part of the regular season. "We are left to conclude that the owners are pursuing this course for no other reason than that they believe they can, with little care for those affected." NHL lockout is bad news for businesses near Consol Since the NHL officially cancelled all preseason games, Pittsburgh City Council President Darlene M. Harris called for an agreement to be reached that would allow the season to go forward and minimize the impact on Pittsburgh’s local economy. In a letter to NHL Commissioner, Gary Bettman and NHL Players’ Association Executive Director, Donald Fehr, Council President Harris expressed concern that a locked out season would severely impact Pittsburgh’s workers and businesses. The full letter can be viewed here. “In addition to being a positive economic force, the Penguins are an important point of pride for the City of Pittsburgh,” Harris wrote. “Pittsburgh left its mark on the hockey world when on New Year’s Day 2011, in the midst of a rainstorm, the Penguins and Capitals dropped the puck in front of 68,111 fans and 4.5 million home viewers in the NHL’s first primetime outdoor showcase.” President Harris also pointed out that “City, Regional and State taxpayers have made a significant investment in the NHL and the sport through a business agreement that has created a state of the art home for hockey in Pittsburgh into the future. That agreement is predicated upon the return of tax revenue, business development and enjoyment of the sport, all of which are not being realized by this work stoppage.”
