Mountain communities received their first substantial snowfall of the season this past week. In the Lake Tahoe area, what was bare ground last Sunday evening was covered in white come Monday morning.

By Tuesday afternoon skiers and riders were getting face shots from Sugar Bowl to Kirkwood. After a few more inches fell Wednesday into Thursday, some locales claimed more than three feet of new snow from the storm.

The skiing has been been nothing short of fantastic. Most users have been sticking to ski resorts that allow uphill travel. Squaw Valley turned a lift for a good cause on Thursday. The energy from those who’ve accepted Mother Nature’s change in the weather has electrified anyone who’s been in the area all week.

Even though it’s not yet Halloween, many Lake Tahoe snowsliders have enjoyed at least one, and as many as five powder days as a result of this early season magic. While ski resorts hosted much of the action through the storms, by the end of the week terrain that’s not usually skiable until December saw tracks. One can only hope that this is a sign of good things to come for Tahoe and the rest of ski country this winter.

Backcountry Lessons

As more backcountry travelers push out the gates, up the skin track, and into the wilderness, the issue of snow safety education becomes all the more important. In such a tight-knit community, the effects of avalanches and avalanche related deaths resonate through and through, top to bottom. Refresher courses and practical recovery drills are touted, but can easily fall by the wayside once the snow starts flying. After an early season of quick day tours and mellow backcountry laps, I realized it was time for me to get educated.

Champocalypse: Dispatch From The Alps

The world capital of alpinism is more known for black ice and crevasses than for deep snow, but the last couple of weeks in Chamonix were an early season tourist-free snorklely powder armageddon for the local storm crows. What POV-enthusiast Nathan Wallace blearily called a "Fifty-Year Event" when I spoke with him a couple of days ago has left the region absurdly stacked, and the storm track has extended all the way across the Mediterranean. The Atlantic.com ran a gallery of people playing in the snow in Jerusalem and Damascus, and someone sent me a pov video from a ski descent on the Island of Crete. I repeat, Crete.

Next Year’s Gear

We spent the last two weeks at industry trade shows, getting fluorescent light tans and listening to brands talk about 20k/20k and progressive sidecuts. It was a lot to take in. Next year, like every year, there's a bunch of really cool gear coming out, and a lot of unoriginal crap. This is the stuff we're actually excited about for next year.
