The Make Every Life Count High-level Meeting on the Improvement of Civil Registration and Vital Statistics (CRVS) in Asia and the Pacific took place on 10-11 December 2012, immediately before the Third Session of the Committee on Statistics (12-14 December 2012). The Meeting was hosted by ESCAP and the World Health Organization (WHO) and co-organized with 18 additional partners (see below).

The High-level Meeting introduced the Make Every Life Count initiative to improve CRVS in Asia and the Pacific and reviewed the political, institutional and resource challenges facing member States in improving their CRVS systems. The Meeting aimewith the aim of reaching consensus around the key actions needed to enhance these systems in the region.

The High-level Meeting established consensus on a draft Regional Strategic Plan containing country actions and regional support activities from development partners that allow governments to take the necessary steps to strengthen their CRVS systems . This consensus will lay a solid foundation for future steps in the Make Every Life Count initiative.

Importantly, the High-level Meeting opened on the International Human Rights Day (10 December), presenting an ideal opportunity to highlight how civil registration and vital statistics systems significantly help safeguard human rights.
