Under Sombunall Books For Which RAW Has Written…:
We really ought to add:
Seven By Seven, a collection of interviews edited by Neal Wilgus. there’s a (relatively) long interview with RAW and one with Shea, too. The book was published in 1996, as far as I can tell, but the interviews themselves seen to have taken place around 1976-77?
Note: Shea gets asked about the missing parts of Iluminatus! and it’s a slightly different story than what RAW usually gave:
Wilgus: I understand that 500 pages – close to forty percent of the original manuscript – was cut from Illuminatus! before it was published. Do you think this helped or hurt the novel?
Shea: The original manuscript was around 1200 type-written pages, and we were asked to cut about 200 pages, which we did, screaming in agony all the while. This didn’t do any mortal structural damage to the novel. It did cost us some good writing, and some funny bits. A lot of what was cut was occult information in the appendices. Also, _When Atlantis Ruled The Earth_ was originally a complete screenplay-within-novel. Now it’s down to a summary.
Wilgus: Any chance the uncut version will ever see print?
Shea: If the book catches on enough so that a hardcover or quality paperback publisher wants to produce the uncut version as a service to literature. But printing and paper costs so much nowadays, it’s doubtful anyone will want to take a chance. No, the more I think about it, the less likely it seems.

And Shea, at this point, (1976?) still seems to think the missing stuff is around somewhere; RAW has always maintained it got lost in the mail between Shea (Chicago), RAW (Mexico) and NY (Dell).

Nice catch. I used to have that and a few others listed on the interview page, but since I don’t have the actual interview digitized, the listings all got edited out… I will need to rethink that one…
