FILE FORMATS
Generally speaking, look for .azw, .mobi, .txt or .rtf for the Kindle. For most other readers, .epub will work.

Lending Websites
Some readers gather online to swap ebooks via the lend-once feature offered by Amazon and Barnes & Noble. For both retailers, lending can only be done once, the loan lasts 14 days, and is enabled on a title by title basis at the publisher’s discretion. At present lending only works in the U.S., largely due to rights issues in other regions.

Indie publisher www.smashwords.com/ has quite a few decent books available free. You can sort by downloads or rating to bypass the dross. There is a short/long choice but it is negated by the free setting The current (6 Dec ’10) top rated freebie is time limited (end ’10) but sells on Amazon for 2.99 in USA
