Workshops

 

NEW THIS YEAR - The meeting organizers are soliciting proposals for workshops at the meeting.  Workshops are scheduled for two-hour sessions on the afternoons of June 21 and 22, and will be open to all meeting attendees.   The workshops will allow meeting participants to discuss strategy, plan resources, exchange methodology, etc.  Participants will not be required to submit general meeting abstracts for their workshop presentations.  Those wishing to organize a workshop that continues over both of the two sessions will also be considered.  If interested in organizing a workshop, please complete the online proposal form including the following information by March 1:

Zebrafish Atlas Workshop

A one day pre-meeting workshop to discuss progress and coordinate efforts towards a digital atlas for the zebrafish will be held Wednesday, June 20. Guest speakers are Julie Simpson (Fly Brain Aligner), Scott Fraser (Digital Fish), Richard Baldock (Edinburgh Mouse Atlas) and  Monte Westerfield (ZFIN). Participants will be selected for short talks and all attendees will contribute to break-out groups. We will use this platform to devise a coordinated strategy for future directions and funding initiatives. Advance registration is required. The registration fee is $20 US. The deadline to register is April 30, 2012. You will be notified of acceptance to the workshop by May 7.

 


 

Chi-Bin Chien Award

Description

The Chi-Bin Chien Award has been established by the zebrafish research community and GSA in memory of Dr. Chi-Bin Chien (1965 – 2011). Chi-Bin was Professor of Neurobiology and Anatomy at the University of Utah and served the international zebrafish community in numerous ways, including his service as Director of the Zebrafish Neural Development and Genetics Course at the Woods Hole Marine Biological Laboratory and as an organizer of the International Conference on Zebrafish Genetics and Development. The Award will celebrate Chi-Bin’s enthusiasm and love for the discussion of scientific ideas and the good things that grow out of interactions and open discourse among scientists, his efforts to mentor and support the development of young scientists, and the collaborative and generous spirit with which he contributed to the advance of research with the zebrafish. The award will be given to an outstanding graduate student, postdoctoral trainee, or recently appointed faculty member from any country who has made significant contributions to the field of zebrafish research and has exhibited the generosity and openness that characterized and motivated Chi-Bin. The awardee will be granted a cash award and international recognition as an invited speaker at the biennial International Conference on Zebrafish Development and Genetics.

Nominations - are no longer being accepted. The deadline was April 1, 2012.

Nominations for the Chi-Bin Chien Award should be submitted by the candidate’s PhD or post-doctoral mentor April 1, 2012 to zebrafish@genetics-gsa.org. The application package should be a single PDF file that includes:

 

  1. A one-page statement from the nominee describing his/her research and its importance to the advancement of zebrafish research.
  2. The nominee's C.V.
  3. Letter of recommendation from the mentor
  4. Letter of recommendation from one additional scholar who is familiar with the research being described in the application
