Welcome to the Rio Grande Chapter of the Sierra Club

The Sierra Club's members and supporters are more than 700,000 of your friends and neighbors. Like the river for which it’s named, the Sierra Club's Rio Grande Chapter is comprised of five local groups covering New Mexico and West Texas. The region stretches from alpine tundra to Chihuahuan desert and everything in between. Explore this website to learn more about what we're doing, where we're headed, and how you can participate. This site can provide information about everything from recycling and hiking to environmental education and conservation - join in and help us protect the air, land and water throughout our beautiful state and west Texas!

Group territories are built of zip codes. But to make things simpler, we have tried to make group boundaries follow county boundaries where possible. We have three tools to help you see what group you are in:

Current priority conservation efforts are headed by Chapter and Group leaders throughout the State and include:

  • Clean energy solutions – emphasis on energy efficiency and accelerating adoption of distributed solar energy
  • Transitioning from dirty coal to clean energy
  • Cool Cities programs
  • Public Lands protection

Within the Rio Grande Chapter web site are each Group’s own web site. Announcements of outings, events, seminars and local campaigns are updated constantly.

Find out current information about outings all over the State. Each Group organizes many hikes each month. Get info, plan to join these activities outdoors, and maybe even find others to carpool with - increase your awareness of threatened areas too. The Northern New Mexico Group also publishes an excellent book “Day Hikes in the Santa Fe Area” which includes descriptions of 60 hikes.
