About the Cumberland Chapter of the Sierra Club

The Chapter is governed by an Executive Committee consisting of thirteen members: a representative from each of six groups and seven members elected from the general membership. The Chapter holds its annual meeting in the fall of each year and a leadership retreat each winter.

In recent years the Cumberland Chapter has been involved in many conservation issues including protection of the Red River Gorge, promoting legislation to establish Kentucky's wild river system and lobbying for federal wilderness designation for the Beaver Creek and Clifty areas. The Chapter also advocates strict enforcement of the federal surface mining, clean water and clean air acts, forest management, legislation for state planning, zoning, waste disposal and then protection of lakes, streams and agricultural and wetland areas. Individual members of the Chapter are often asked to serve on various task forces or advisory committees which address a wide array of conservation issues.

The Cumberland Chapter publishes a monthly newsletter, The Cumberland, which contains articles pertaining to national, regional, state and local issues; Chapter and Group news; and announcements of meetings, outings and special events.

The Chapter also sponsors an Outings Program which offers opportunities to explore Kentucky's natural and wilderness areas through day hikes, extended trips, backpacking, canoe trips and other outing activities. All outing activities are sponsored and supervised by a trained and qualified volunteer outing leader.
