Tour of Indiana's Lost RiverWhen:
Details: The tour starts at 8AM from the southeast corner of the Orleans town square, at the junction of state roads 37 and 337. It is led by members of the Lost River Conservation Association, who present a brief overview of the Lost River in the town square gazebo starting about 20 minutes before the tour begins. The tour is a car caravan. People may drive their cars or carpool with others. There is a break from noon to 1PM for lunch in an Orleans restaurant. The tour ends at about 4:30PM at the Orangeville Rise Nature Preserve, which is about four miles southwest of Orleans. Other notable stops include the terminus zone, where the river normally disappears underground, and the Wesley Chapel Gulf, where the river briefly rises to the surface again. Other features include sinkholes and swallow holes. People may do just the morning or afternoon segments of the tour if they choose. There is no fee, but people will have to pay for their lunches, or they can bring food and picnic on the green (weather permitting). Donations to the LRCA are always welcome. Reservations are not required. The tour takes place rain or shine. (It may be more interesting in the rain.) There is some moderate hiking along the bank or in the river bed, so sturdy footwear, long-sleeve shirts and pants are recommended. Insect repellent, sunscreen, cameras and binoculars may also come in handy. Directions:
