Enjoy the outdoors this winter in Delaware!
Delaware Seashore State Park: Burton Island Trail
A short easy trail through wetlands and scrub forest with interesting views of the marsh. It would probably be best explored when it is not summer, as the intense sun and wetlands would make it a hot, steamy and buggy experience. Spring and fall are perfect times to enjoy this trail.
Iron Hill Park
Iron hill park is an interesting New Castle County park with numerous trails through a wooded forest and interesting historic and prehistoric destinations. The park is located very close to I-95, so the sound of the highway does penetrate the forest. This is a dog-friendly park and a it is a delight to ramble around and explore.
Lums Pond State Park: Swamp Forest Trail
Swamp Forest is the perfect name for this trail, because it goes through a swampy forest around the entirety of Lums Pond. Much of the trail is tranquil forested areas with beautiful views of the pond. There are a few things to take note of, though. There is an off-leash dog area very close to the trail, so you will likely encounter off-leash dogs on the trail near the dog park. The northern border of the trail goes through many of the activity areas of the park, including picnic grounds and the boat rental docks. If you can't find the trail where it picks up on the other side, just go close to the water and you'll be able to find it again.
White Clay Creek Preserve (PA): Tri-State Marker
A very short trail through a field and forest to the Tri-State Marker boundary point for Maryland, Pennsylvania and Delaware ("The Wedge").
White Clay Creek State Park and Preserve (PA): Boundary Line Trail
A gorgeous, quiet trail through mature and emerging forests and meadows, and the largest hills in the park. Hike to the highest point in White Clay Creek State Park, and continue into Pennsylvania. Bikes are allowed on much of this trail, so stay alert. The trail continues to the right at Yeatman Station Road, or go left to connect with the Charles Bailey Trail and loop back to the parking lot.
White Clay Creek State Park and Preserve (PA): Charles Bailey Trail
This is a wonderful trail that goes from Delaware's White Clay Creek State Park into Pennsylvania's White Clay Creek Preserve along tranquil White Clay Creek. Enjoy the quiet forest without any sounds of civilization, and beautiful views of White Clay Creek from numerous vantage points.
White Clay Creek State Park: Big Pond Trail
This is a short trail through a meadow-like area of farm fields. It borders some forest area between fields, with a final destination being a pond. The trail is very close to Paper Mill Road, so the sound of cars is constant. The field is apparently used as an airfield for model aircraft, which can also be quite noisy. There is no shade at all, so go late in the day. The pond is difficult to see, and there are no good points to access the shoreline.
White Clay Creek State Park: Bryan's Field Trail
This is an interesting short trail through forest, a reforestation project, and farm fields. An interesting point of interest is a Mason and Dixon marker just a short distance off the trail. The eastern portion of the trail is near Paper Mill Road, so there are a lot of road noises for a good part of the hike. A good portion of this trail is in open fields, so sun protection is needed. Mountain bikes use the trail, so stay alert.
White Clay Creek State Park: Chestnut Hill Trail
A popular and well-maintained trail in the Judge Morris Estate, is frequented by bicyclists, joggers, hikers and dogs. The trail meanders through forest, over small streams, and past Pike Creek. Nearby roads, including Kirkwood Highway and Polly Drummond Road, create a good bit of noise on most parts of the trail.
White Clay Creek State Park: David English Trail
A comfortable trail loop that is popular for hikers and bicyclists. The tail is in very good condition, is well-marked, and meanders through forest and meadow, with some nice hills and thickly wooded areas.
White Clay Creek State Park: Twin Valley Trail
This is a really nice trail through a diverse forest, some parts of which have very large trees. There are some really interesting sights along the trail, including a few wooden bridges, an old stone wall, the Arc Monument, and a old car rusting away just a few feet from the trail. Though it is possible to hear White Clay Creek from part of the trail (at the old car), you don't actually see the creek from the trail. It is hard to believe that such a quiet spot exists so close to downtown Newark.
White Clay Creek State Park: Whitley Farms Trail
A quiet, rambling, and mostly flat trail through forest and meadows. Some of the forests are full of interesting vines, while others are mature with little underbrush. This trail is a shared-use trail with bicycles, so stay alert.
