826LA provides a variety of free programming for students ages 6–18, designed to challenge and enchant while strengthening writing skills. Read on for an overview of our programs, and please click on the headers to find out even more.

After-School Tutoring

Four days a week during the school year, 826LA is packed with neighborhood students who come in after school for free one-on-one tutoring in all subject areas. Daily writing prompts are posted for students when they complete their homework, and reading—silent and aloud—is a standard part of every student’s experience in this program.

Field Trips

Up to four times a week, we welcome into our writing labs an entire public school classroom for a morning of high-energy learning. In our most popular field trip for elementary school students, Storytelling & Bookmaking, students write, illustrate, and bind their own books in a little over two hours. We also offer choose-your-own-adventure field trips for middle school students, screenwriting field trips for high school students, and more—including custom-designed field trips.

Workshops

All year round, we offer free workshops designed to foster creativity and strengthen writing skills in a wide variety of areas, from the playful to the practical. All workshops are project-based and taught by experienced, accomplished professionals.

Keep up to date on 826LA workshops at our workshop calendar. You can also sign up for our workshop announce list.

In-School Programs

During the school year, we dispatch teams of volunteers into local high-need public schools to support teachers and provide one-on-one assistance to students on writing projects. Students and volunteers work together to generate ideas, revise essays, or create elaborate story lines and characters.

Publishing

826LA’s Young Authors’ Book Project takes students through the entire process of book production and publication. Students learn to revise, writing up to ten drafts of an essay or story under the guidance of a professional editor, and make decisions about the final publication. We also publish regularly in our other programs; our journalism programs publish The Venice Wave and 826LA Good Times every 6–8 weeks, and we publish chapbooks several times a year in after-school tutoring.
