Stresses and strengths in caregiving

Adult child caregivers face dilemmas regarding the utilities and disutilities of taking care of their parents. In a way often the elders offer financial help. They are also useful in holding their children’s family together while providing a support network back home when their children are off to work. Yet as they age and grow older they often need much more care and thus gradually tend to become obstacles in the way of the proper functioning of the family. Thus the thought of such issues generates great guilt for the caregivers.

In case the old parent lives some distance apart from their adult children it is often the case when the parents start failing to secure basic amenities like visits to the doctors or calling the plumber for work or house repair for themselves. So in spite of the fact there is a significant amount of emotional support from the caregiver he/she is often falling short of meeting his/her parents’ needs. Needs, which require their physical presence to be fulfilled.

Thus as an obvious consequence very often the old parents shift in with the adult child caregiver.  This is the result of the fact that the older find it easier to move in than the younger moving to an entirely new location. If even that is not possible, attempts are made to establish closer contacts with the older parents by more frequent visits, emails, letters, and similar stuff. But mostly such a situation results in the older parents shifting in with the younger children.
