Teacher Absenteeism Puts Students at a Loss

New data from the U.S. Department of Education suggest that teacher absenteeism is becoming a serious problem, with about one in three teachers missing more than 10 days of school each year. June Kronholz takes a close look at the problem, and at the quality of teaching that takes place when teachers are absent, in a new article for Education Next.

A five-year study of 43 KIPP schools conducted by Mathematica Policy Research concludes that “the average impact of KIPP on student achievement is positive, statistically significant, and educationally substantial.” In the Spring 2013 issue of Ed Next, Robert Pondiscio looks at how graduates of KIPP and other No Excuses schools do in college and what is being done to help alumni of these schools succeed.
