Culture, Coffee and Cocktails:
Articulate City and Cranknstein Announce Alliance
Arts and culture social club selects new bicycle-beerbar-café as regular First Friday art party place

FORT COLLINS, Colo. – Articulate City, a Fort Collins social club on a mission to expand the audience for community arts events, is entering its sixth year of “putting the art in party” by forming a new partnership. Cranknstein, a recently opened downtown establishment (located at 215 N. College Ave.), will serve as a clubhouse of sorts for Articulate City starting in 2012 – the group will gather there on the first Friday of each month. Part bike shop, part coffee house, part bar, Cranknstein offers Articulate City’s culture-curious crowd a place to meet, convene and converse before and after First Friday Gallery Walk each month.

“As Articulate City has grown over the years, it has become harder and harder for us to find establishments that are able to accommodate a big group of people that want to get together to socialize on one of the most popular nights of the week: Friday,” said Jeanie Sutter, Articulate City’s co-founder. “One of the things we’ve learned over the years is that our members – who generally fall within the 25-45 year-old demographic – like to be able to explore art together, then be able to have a spirited conversation about it, usually over a cocktail. We struggled to find a place where people could consistently connect to socialize. We needed a clubhouse.”

Enter Cranknstein, which Sutter said is a natural fit for Articulate City, due to its spacious and comfortable atmosphere, and its proximity to downtown’s bustling art district. And the beer and coffee doesn’t hurt.

“For years, people have gathered at two main types of places for social interaction and arts-and-culture conversations: pubs and coffee houses. Cranknstein is both, and they’re located right in the heart of the art happenings in Fort Collins,” Sutter said. “When we approached [Cranknstein proprietors] Susan and Evan, they were excited about the idea and open to giving Articulate City a designated hang-out spot every First Friday.”

Cranknstein will be offering the group its back room on First Fridays during Gallery Walk, as well as adding some regular discounts for Articulate City members that night. Articulate City will invite arts organizations to join them for brief promos of upcoming events. While monthly First Friday Cranknstein gatherings represent a bit of structure change in Articulate City’s offerings, Sutter said the group will continue to arrange outings throughout the year for theatre, music, dance and other events as an opportunity to utilize the Articulate City passport program, which offers discounts to community cultural events as a significant benefit of the group’s affordable $25 annual membership. Articulate City will meet at Cranknstein for First Friday starting January 6, 2012, at 6 p.m., then will head out to enjoy gallery walk, reconvening as a group at Cranknstein at 9 p.m.
