ALAMOSA The man found dead beside the Rio Grande River levee Monday afternoon has been identified.
Kenneth Holmes, about 58 years old, Alamosa, appeared to have died the same day he was found, according to Alamosa County Coroner Kevin Rogers.
He came from Alabama but had lived here for several years, Rogers said. We just found and notified the next of kin this evening [Tuesday.]
Rogers said an autopsy had been performed Tuesday morning, but he did not have the results yet.
Lt. Duane Oakes of the Alamosa Police Department said he was waiting on autopsy results as well.
On the surface there was no indication of foul play, Oakes said. We did not have anyone at the autopsy, so we dont know what they found.
Rogers said he was not sure whether the death was natural or if other factors were involved.
We are still looking into that, Rogers said. I dont know if anything can be ruled out, but he had a medical condition that could have been a factor.
A jogger on the levee that runs between the Rio Grande River and Cattails Golf Club found the body and notified police.
Holmes was lying in an area with brush and trees, but was visible from the track that is frequented by joggers.
Holmes was fully clothed, lying stomach down with his head pointed toward the levee. He had a wallet in his pocket with possibly a jacket beside him.
Rogers said he did not know when the results from the autopsy would be available.
