Since February 2011, King Hamad bin Isa Al-Khalifa’s regime has been doing everything possible to crush the pro-democracy protest movement in Bahrain. It has been censoring, misinforming, lying and cracking down.
The authorities have used every imaginable tool of repression in an attempt to impose a blackout on news and information.
Journalists have been physically attacked, jailed, prosecuted and dismissed. Websites have been blocked. Smear campaigns have targeted government critics. Amid almost complete impunity, two netizens and a media owner have paid with their lives for defending the right to inform others.
The government has put a lot of effort in trying to portray Bahrain as a haven of peace. Hosting a Formula One Grand Prix is part of the big lie that the regime is promoting in a bid to repair its image. Together let’s condemn King Hamad’s propaganda and the violence used against those trying to provide us with news and information.
