Charlotte’s Interwebs: Chapter Three, iniquitousfish

by Garrick

Well hello children, and welcome to Charlotte’s Interwebs.  Just like the book Charlotte’s Web taught us about the beauty of nature, and mankind’s desire to kill it and eat it, Charlotte’s Interwebs will scour The Tubes for things beautiful, funny, or just too awful not to share.

Chapter Three: iniquitousfish

So I’m cheating in this post. I happen to know Meredith “IRL” as the kids are saying theses days.  Also I’m really reviewing her three sites, so……deal. But really, if I didn’t know her, I would still do a write-up on her work. They are just too damn good-looking not to. She does everything in house(unless specified otherwise). That’s pencil, ink, color, backgrounds, writing(for Scraps & Hinges)  and I’m lucky enough to have some of her art hanging on my walls. But on to the sites!

iniquitousfish: This is her main blog/portfolio.  Cruse down here to check out her commission works and bigger pieces.  You will also get a link to her twitter and any other fun announcements she has going on.

Scraps:  My personal favorite. But that’s probably because I occasionally appear in it. Scraps is a journal comic which chronicles  Meredith’s life(updates Tues&Thurs). Watch her inject a cat, or be un-bouncable.  Perhaps  you would like to see her ruin my things or her rendition of my wife working at home? No matter where you start, read the whole backlog. Its pretty damn funny.  And she updates on a schedule! This is all done in her “itty” style, which has to be the best chibi renditions I have seen. She manages to capture emotion and movement in such small images. Many other artist who use this kind of style come of flat or just overly cutesy.  Her work makes a world filled with little versions of ourselves believable.

Hinges: Let me save you some time. Start here.  Read all of yet? There isn’t that many pages out so far, she only updates on Friday……Ready? Ok.  As I have mentioned before, I love wordless story telling. And while there is dialog in this series, two of the main characters have been mute so far. But that has only added to the draw( see what I did there)  of this comic. I really have no idea where Meredith is going to take us with this, but I am in for the long haul.  The detail work in all of the backgrounds is stunning. And the character design is fresh. You can see where she has pulled inspiration for her style from various animation and comics, but she blends it into something uniquely her own.  I have never met someone whose artwork has such complex subtly. And I think that is what attracts me to her work, the completely fleshed out, consistent, unique artwork.

On this episode, Garrick plays tons of awful sounds from his Kindle, we talk about what games we’ve been playing this week, argue about the Kessel Run, Manny talks about his new smartphone, Garrick still can’t get Portal 2 to run, we discuss the implications of giving players the ability to create their own content, talk about our favorite demos, wonder if OS Snoop Lion will work on Mike’s computer, Mike and Manny amuse themselves with a game of Tic-Tac-Toe while misquoting Wargames, David talks about how much he dislikes the state of Arizona, Garrick thinks he wins the podcast, and we love/hate on Ghost Rider: Spirit of Vengance. Email us at yoclustergeek@gmail.com and it’ll end up on the air!

Will the Next Generation of Consoles Even Turn On?

All three major video game companies are poised and ready to unleash their new entertainments at a public more than willing to throw all of their cash at them. Nintendo’s coming out of the gate first with the Wii U, which is essentially a Sega Pico, followed by Microsoft and Sony with their next-gen offerings in the coming years. We’ve seen games from this upcoming generation: Nintendo’s got Nintendoland, Nintendoland, and Nintendoland (also Pikmin), we’ve seen demos of Watch Dogs and Star Wars 1313 which were essentially running on top-of-the-line computer equipment, and Epic just showcased their newest iteration in Unreal (which I don’t even have a joke for because that shit is badass). But the one thing no one has addressed is bothering me the most: will this shit fucking work when I take it home and turn it on? Read more…

Guest Contribution: Classical Compilations

by David Roberts

This is the part of the website where I turn over the reins to a guest writer; someone with a unique point of view on a topic they are passionate about. Today, it is fellow co-worker, musician, writer, poet, and all-around Renaissance man, Manuel Arenas. Do you have something that needs to be said? Email us at yoclustergeek@gmail.com with your submission, and you could see it here.

Now, maybe I’m overestimating our general reading public, but I am assuming that at least some of you are worldly enough to have at least passed through a local classical music section on your way to the CD singles, yes? For those of you that stayed for more than five minutes, perhaps to look for that requisite copy of Orff’s Carmina Burana, or maybe an inexpensive version of Ravel’s Bolero (for those special times with your “significant other”–I despise that term, by the way), I address this diatribe.
