Redefining the DJ Infographic Continue reading

Challenge

‘Produce a piece of information design based on the theme of ‘Redefining the DJ’ that encapsulates the entire history of
recorded music.'

Approach

TEDx London is an independently organized TED event in the capital. The series of talks focused on the true impact the often-misunderstood 'disc jockey' has had on culture, ranging from the origin of the term, to why the DJ plays an increasingly prominent role
in society.

Signal | Noise was commissioned to create an information design piece which showed the history of DJing, starting from the first ever recording in the mid-1800s, and demonstrating how it has developed and shaped the culture around it. It also needed to reference the ethos behind TEDx, which is founded on the principle of 'ideas worth spreading'.

Outcome

We developed an A0 timeline poster that could only be seen under UV lighting at the TEDx event, which was held at the 92 Feet East club on London’s famous
Brick Lane.

The timeline reflected major milestones – representing technology, artists and culture – and how all these were interwoven for key historical moments. The design was also incorporated into TEDx’s custom iPhone app.
