A collaboration with Ryan Trecartin and based on an idea by Ryan and Tumblr founder David Karp, riverthenet is a continuous stream of 10 second, user submitted videos. Videos are tagged with 3 words or phrases, and videos with the same tag are linked together to create a playlist. The result is a frenetic and often hilarious juxtaposition of videos. And, since it’s all user submitted videos, there’s also some NSFW content, so be warned when watching.

riverthenet was show at the New Museum in 2010 as part of the exhibition Free, curated by Lauren Cornell.

The site was built using Django for the backend and Backbone.js for the frontend. It uses the cloud-based Panda video encoding platform to handle video uploading and encoding, Amazon s3 for storage and Amazon Cloudfront for video delivery.
