Rosscott

Rosscott is a graphic designer, web designer, illustrator, animator, comic artist, lover, fighter, and is generally kinda famous on the internet. He sometimes appears at conventions such as Connecticon, Otakon, Baltimore Comic Con, and other Something-Cons. If you are a part of such a con, contact him! I mean me. Email is below.

I’m always open to doing podcasts, interviews, or otherwise discuss the work I do through this site. Just email me and we’ll see what we can do.

In addition to this blog/comic, Rosscott is also one of the MCs for Super Art Fight, a live art competition that tours the East Coast (and is always looking for more shows). He is also currently a professor of graphic design, where his students generally think this website is dumb and poorly designed for a graphic designer. They aren’t all wrong.

The System and Symbol Signs

The System is created using the International Symbol Signs established originally as a set in 1974. The core set of these icons is available for free from the American Institute of Graphic Artists (AIGA) through their website here. They have been referred to as “Helvetica Man”, “Bathroom Guy”, “Isotypes” and many other names. Check out this article on Idsgn for more info.

The System is set in Helvetica Neue (mostly bold.) Helvetica Neue is a redrawing of the original Helvetica typeface created by Linotype in the 1980s. The original Helvetica was designed by Max Miedinger in 1957 for the Haas foundry of Switzerland (the name is derived from Helvetia, the Latin name for Switzerland).

If you would like to contact me for whatever reason you can think of, send emails to systemcomic@gmail.com. I’m also on Twitter as @Rosscott and The System can be found through @Systemcomic.

If you’re curious, here is what currently goes in the program books when I have the humble opportunity of being invited to cons:

Rosscott is kinda famous on the Internet.  Between podcasting, blogging, and writing bios about himself in the third person, he finds time to write the always amazing webcomic The System (www.systemcomic.com/), a daily comic-strip style mess starring iconography and graphics most notable from street and wayfinding signage.  Having been written about in Fleen, Comic Book Resources, and onward through the blogosphere (which surprisingly does not set off my spell check), The System and its growing fans (known as Systemics) are sneaking up behind you and hoping that you join their ranks, for which you may receive a cookie*.  While he often travels, he maintains his humble apartment in Washington, DC (which is in need of a fair amount of tidying).
