FreeBSD

FreeBSD is my choice of open source operating system.

It is a rock solid as a server and I recommend it to anyone who needs an in-house server or needs to build an appliance.

What is FreeBSD?

Well, FreeBSD is an operating system originally developed at the University of California, Berkely

Read more about it here: www.freebsd.org/about.html

Where can I get FreeBSD?

Of course you can get FreeBSD by going to the main website here: www.freebsd.org/where.html

However, you should always check with your ISP to see if they have a mirror. For example, XMission, an ISP here in Utah, has a mirrors site where FreeBSD can be downloaded. mirrors.xmission.com/freebsd. I am often on XMission’s network.

However, Comcast or Qwest, also ISPs commonly used in Utah, do NOT have a mirror site where you can Download FreeBSD.  I am not sure why. I have request it.

Why FreeBSD?

Well, there are a couple of reasons that I like FreeBSD over other open source operating system.

  • I love ports
  • The license is really free, not a viral license, and I prefer it to the GPL.
  • I get a different point of view than I normally do (as I work primarily in windows).
  • The documentation is excellent

What don’t I like about FreeBSD?

  • The branding.
    • The name is four syllables and not catchy.
    • The new logo is adequate, now.
    • The mascot, while I like Beastie, he is sort of unprofessional, though it is just fine for a community. However, the MeetBSD California mascott is fine!
  • The lack of Flash Player. Gnash and Flash using Linux compatibility limp us through.
  • The lack of a GUI network manager (PC-BSD has one but there is not one in FreeBSD ports that just works).

Learning About FreeBSD

I am always learning new things. I try to post something that I have learned about FreeBSD every Friday. I call it FreeBSD Friday (yes, I chose Friday because it alliterates).
