Sunday, March 3, the SpaceX Dragon and its 2300+ pounds of cargo docked on the international space station. The only commercial vehicle to make return runs, Dragon is expected to return to Earth on March 25 with over 3000 pounds of cargo. Along with SpaceX success, Rose-Hulman celebrates the contribution of alumnus Jeff Van Treuren. Two years out of college, Van Treuren began working at SpaceX, and made history as he and his team members witnessed the launch of this first private unmanned spacecraft. Rose-Hulman's hands-on, project-based learning and rigorous course work allow Rose-Hulman graduates like Jeff to aim high. Read about Jeff at SpaceX.
Like many of our award-winning faculty members, including six professors among the nation’s Best 300 Professors, Civil Engineering Professor Jim Hanson, PhD, encourages creative thinking from his students. “It’s those out-of-the-box concepts that excite me and bring me to the classroom with a sense of wonder,” says the 2012 Dean’s Outstanding Teacher Award Winner. There’s an annual tradition in Civil Engineering - students give Hanson a tie signed by each graduating senior Civil Engineering student. “The tie is a constant reminder of why I’m a teacher,” he says. “I exist for my students.”
With sought-after graduates, Rose-Hulman offers degrees in several of today's most in-demand fields. Recently, ten female Rose-Hulman students had an eye-opening experience when invited to the Inforum Leadership Seminar, part of this year's North American Auto Show in Detroit and a rare invitational opportunity. During the event, both Ford and Chrysler invited the students to consider careers in the diverse, cutting-edge field of automotive development.
