I am a Reader in the Agents, Interaction and Complexity Research Group in the School of Electronics and Computer Science at the University of Southampton.

Research Interests

I am interested in developing and applying agent-based algorithms and mechanisms for the control of decentralised systems, particularly decentralised information systems such as sensor networks and future energy networks such as the smart grid. I work with ideas that lie at the intersection of artificial intelligence, data fusion, game theory and microeconomics.

I am also leading a project to search for the New Forest Cicada using smartphones, and running a home heating energy advice trial called MyJoulo.

Short Bio

I originally studied Physics at Durham University, graduating in July 1992, before joining Schlumberger Oilfield Services as a wireline logging engineer. After five years working offshore in various locations around the world, I took suspended employment to study for a PhD concerned with the statistical modelling of genetic algorithms and evolving populations. Upon completing my PhD I worked with EuroBios (a Santa Fe Institute spin-off company) applying complexity science to business problem, and through this work I developed an interest in agent technologies, and their application in real world problems.
