Greg Pickersgill's HELMET COLLECTION

This website devoted to 20th and 21st century military combat helmets started off in 2003. It was a little crude and basic in the beginning, and had to improve. It did, a little.

Unfortunately with the exception of a fairly regular update of the Helmet Websites directory I have totally failed to make any useful update of the rest of it. I am presently at least 50 helmets behind in terms of photographing and webbing, and a lot of the (rather basic) text herein has not been improved or (horrifyingly) had some errors and omissions corrected. In a sense I have been defeated by my own intentions; I wanted to re-photograpoh and rewrite the whole lot, but kept getting diverted onto other things. I am of course ashamed.

The good news though is that unless I get seriously sidetracked I will be starting on a complete rebuild of this site later this year (2007).

Whatever happens this helmet site is never going to be as detailed or thorough as the brilliant Joseba's, or some others. I don't pretend I can compete with their level of knowledge or web design. I don't even want to be dwelling on the purely technical too much; I'll leave that to the better informed among us. I do not have the time, location, or resources to do any worthwhile primary research, so I'm entirely dependent on my reference library, the web,  and other collectors for information.

What I am really trying for is a straightforward enthusiast's site - a sort of simple I-Spy-Helmets - giving details and observations about my own collection that should be useful to other comparatively new helmet fans like myself.

The whole point of this site is to be a simple identification guide that will be of use to other new collectors who just need to know "What IS That?", and will concern themselves with the detail (and yes there a startling amount of detail...) later.

Apart from anything else I come from the science fiction fan community, where informed enthusiasm is highly valued, and we often prefer a more personal and conversational tone as opposed to the simple detailing of  facts and figures. I mean, at the death, helmet collecting is fun, but like all good fun it needs to be taken seriously to get the most out of it.

Please note - the annotations to the photographs are basic at the moment; I will include more historical detail and personal observations as this site develops, but for the moment I am happy to let the photographs stand as useful identification guide material. If anyone wants more information about any helmet featured, please contact me.
