Academic Excellence
Appalachian is nationally recognized for its quality academics, which include more than 150 degree programs and 1,500 courses. Opportunities for excellence include The Honors College, Chancellor’s Scholars and Appalachian’s N.C. Teaching Fellows program. Appalachian also offers a wide variety of outstanding graduate programs, including certificates, master’s degrees, and doctoral degrees.

Interdisciplinary Approaches
To ensure that graduates thrive in an interconnected world, Appalachian’s University College and General Education Program teach students how to integrate knowledge from many perspectives. Students learn how to adapt to new environments and continue learning throughout their lives, while thinking critically and creatively, communicating effectively, making local to global connections and understanding the responsibilities of community membership. Interdisciplinary degree programs and interdisciplinary research for undergraduate students, graduate students, and faculty build on this foundation.
The Environment
Appalachian is committed to protecting the environment and promoting sustainability in the forms of alternative energy, economic development and research that benefits the state, nation and world. More than 60 faculty members in various disciplines focus their research in these areas. Appalachian’s environmental leadership is evident through its sustainable development program, appropriate technology program, environmental science degree program, Appalachian Energy Center, biodiesel research, student-led Renewable Energy Initiative and Sustainable Energy Society, and more.
