Five years ago, Centenary UMC was faced with the possibility of closing its doors. But rather than abandon its impoverished community, the church decided to stay "as an outpost of Jesus’ love." With three Candler alums leading the way, membership has grown to more than 200 and the neighborhood is coming back to life. Read more.

Gretchen Van Ess, MDiv/MPH ’11, saw firsthand how Candler’s international programs change lives. She helped bring safe water to children in Haiti (and made fast friends in the process!).
