NBJC Calls on the Department of Justice to Investigate Marco McMillian Murder
The National Black Justice Coalition (NBJC), the nation’s leading Black lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender (LGBT) civil rights organization, is urging the U.S. Department of Justice’s Community Relations Service (CRS) and Civil Rights Division to launch an investigation into the murder of Marco McMillian, an openly gay Black mayoral candidate in Mississippi, as a potential racially-motivated and/or anti-gay hate crime.

Standing in Solidarity with Mississippi Community Around Marco McMillian Homicide
Yesterday, the body of Marco McMillian, an openly gay Black mayoral candidate, was found on the Mississippi River levee. The 34-year-old was running for mayor of Clarksdale, Mississippi, a town of about 17,800 people. Police have ruled his case a homicide but details around the cause of death are still unfolding. NBJC joins the Clarksdale community, and our nation as a whole, in mourning the loss of the avid public servant.

NBJC Applauds House’s Passage of Violence Against Women Act (VAWA)
The National Black Justice Coalition (NBJC), the nation's leading Black lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender (LGBT) civil rights organization, applauds the U.S. House of Representatives for passing the Violence Against Women Act (VAWA) reauthorization bill, which includes explicit protections for LGBT survivors of domestic violence. As a member of The Leadership Conference on Civil and Human Rights, a coalition charged by its diverse membership of more than 210 national organizations to promote and protect the civil and human rights of all persons in the United States, NBJC worked to inform our constituents and elected officials about VAWA's importance and advocated for the bill's passage.

Friends of VAWA Coalition Calls on the House to Defeat the Substitute to S. 47 and Pass the Bipartisan Senate Bill
NBJC joined 72 national organizations to issue a statement opposing the House Republican substitute for the bi-partisan Senate bill (S.47), Violence Against Women Act (VAWA), that includes provisions to protect vulnerable communities, including Native American women, college students, and LGBT individuals.
