HAPPY NEW YEAR!

Posted on January 4, 2011 by Goad

Hope everyone had a great holiday season –  I spent most of the christmas/new years week dealing with a nasty cold, but despite that had a great time seeing friends and family (sorry if I made any of you sick). The good thing about getting a cold though is when I start hitting that “Hey I’m feeling normal again” mark I’m always flooded with a lot of ideas for art (maybe it’s all the Theraflu). But I’ve got a couple things in the works, including a solo show at 4frnt around May/June featuring work from my first ten years as an illustrator as well as a lot of new pieces – more details as I nail them down.  Also, as I mentioned before, we are having our first show, Back From the Dead at the resurrected 4frnt Studios (formerly C2) on February 5th.  BRAAAAAAAAINNNNNZZZZZ.

The Art of Drew Struzan and Cover Run : The DC comic art of Adam Hughes

Posted on October 16, 2010 by Goad

I’ve been on an art book kick lately and just got my copy of the Art of Drew Struzan this morning from Amazon, turned off all the distractions around me and spent about an hour looking and reading every square inch of it.  The thing I love the most about this book is the way he shows sketches and comps for each poster and even gives a little background as to how smoothly or roughly things went in regards to dealing with the art directors.  Drew Struzan is one of those artists that I’m just in total awe of so it’s reassuring to see and hear (from the Escape From Illustration Island podcast) some of the trials and tribulations he’s gone through over the years and that even though his work (to me) represents perfection, the road hasn’t always been perfect for him…you know sometimes when you are an illustrator you think you are the ONLY one who has to deal with problems in the biz, so it’s refreshing to hear that one of your idols has had to go through some of the same stuff as you.  The forward by  director Frank Darabont (Shawshank redemption, Green Mile, The Mist, Walking Dead) had me cracking me up as he talked about how the invention of Photoshop has really killed the artistic side of the movie poster.  Truer words were never spoken.  Well, at least in regards to movie posters and Photoshop.  Drew Struzan officially retired in 2008, his last poster being the one for Indiana Jones and the Crystal Skull and while it’s sad I can totally see where he was coming from.  I hope it’s not a RETIREMENT retirement tho, because movies still need his poster art.

I also picked up a copy of Cover Run which showcases Adam Hughes,  another artist whose work I’m in total awe of.  Like the Drew Struzan book there is a lot of sketches and background for each cover shown….noone draws a better Wonder Woman or Catwoman than Adam Hughes…..
