Fall back, men! Retreat isn’t always a negative thing, especially if you’re running from the feminine frills of the unisex salon. At Aidan Gill for Men, we’ve built a refuge for woeful souls like you. We’ve got a place where a man can get a little consolation among men like himself – style-minded fellows who’d sooner stay ragged and unkempt than fall into the clutches of the enemy.
Aidan Gill is a seasoned veteran of the unisex wars. A native of Dublin and a longtime barber/retailer in London and New Orleans, Gill has spent over 25 years assembling the classic furnishings and memorabilia that make Aidan Gill for Men such a singular men’s enclave, a direct descendant of the once lost and lamented barbershops and gentlemen’s clubs of bygone days.
Step into the impeccably restored 1860s building in New Orleans’ storied Irish Channel and you’ll immediately notice the absence of anything remotely feminine. Our retail shop specializes in items of luxury and necessity that you won’t find in other places where men’s accessories are as marginalized as the men who shop there. Our selection of razors, stands and shaving brushes are all handmade in England by artisans with centuries-old heritage. Our soaps, creams and oils are of similar impeccable quality, and our neckties, cufflinks, office and desk accessories, briefcases and other personal accouterments all represent a timeless masculine style.
Beyond the retail shop’s art deco glass partitions is the definitive gentlemen’s barbershop, handsomely appointed with Aidan Gill’s personal collection of barbershop memorabilia. Antique straight razors, shaving cups, bowls and brushes, art and signage fill the shop’s numerous restored tiger oak cases and cover its walls, all anchored by a six-foot monument to the unknown barber. Full barbering services are available at the antique Koken stations.
Further within the shop’s recesses is the Shave Room, an inner sanctum outfitted with reclining leather Koken chairs and an antique chrome towel steamer. Here, men can enjoy the Shave at the End of the Galaxy, in which the beard is softened with steaming towels and hot lather applications, the most relaxing half-hour that one can legally enjoy in the United States.
So don’t take that cyanide pill yet, men – all is not lost. Classic hot towel shaves and barbering may have disappeared for a generation or two, quality men’s accessories may have been hard to come by in those lean, wartime years, but they have a home once again. At Aidan Gill for Men, you can finally reclaim your sense of style without compromising your masculinity.
