Designer Con is the place for fans, creators, and retailers of collectible toys, designer apparel, and pop art to converge. Held in Pasadena, the show was organized by Ben Goretsky and Ayleen Gaspar, who share a devotion to designer toys and Los Angeles' lowbrow art scene. Among this year's events are a LEGO art show featuring dozens of original LEGO designs, and Dr. Sketchy's Anti-Art School. This alternative-art movement, founded in 2005 in a Brooklyn bar by an art-school dropout, encourages artists and non-artists alike to try their hand at drawing various sexily-attired underground performers. Live painting throughout the day features artists such as Scott Tolleson, Mr. Toast, and Kathie Olivas. The Gumpy Show presents a roster of artists like Frank Kozik and Ritzy Periwinkle selling directly to consumers, lowering prices for buyers while letting the artists keep 100% of the profits. One sure-to-be-big event, Skin Deep, features Scott Wilkowski's limited editions of designer resin toys (by Frank Kozik, October Toys, Buff Monster, and more) that he's altered by inserting skulls and skeletons. The artists involved in Skin Deep will be in attendance and available for signings and photo ops.
