  • Just Don x Jordan Brand BHM Collection
The Jordan Brand has joined forces with prominent head-wear designer Don C of Just Don on a commemoration pack for the 37th anniversary of Black History Month. This exquisite offering sees an implementation of the Air Jordan 1 and snapback hat in all-black-everything, highlighted with reptilian flair luminous accents. Here, the shoe's upper is adored with faux-python skin at its ankle strap and swoosh, while inconspicuous tribal designs echo next to the recognizable watermark and orange inner lining. Signature to Don C's craftsmanship, the snapack's beak is decorated with matching applique, while the crown features quality nubuck ...

  • BEAK> + VEX RUFFIN @THE ECHOPLEX
Photos by Matt Draper The last time Beak> came to LA and played The Troubadour, no one was there. Maybe because no one knew this was band consisted of Geoff Barrow (drummer/vocalist/follow him on Twitter/founding member of Portishead), Billy Fuller and Matt Williams. This combination of musicians create music in such a meticoulous manner, that [...]

  • Music Review: Fear of Men - Early Fragments ..
Fear of Men Early Fragments [Kanine; 2013] by Rowan Savage Rating: “It is good for me that I have been afflicted. I want you to notice that he did not say, it is best for me…” So begins the anonymous sample that opens Fear of Men’s “Mosaic,” a tale of the ambiguous relationship between brokenness and safety. It’s a reference to Psalms, but for the moment, we’ll let that pass to ask: what is an affliction? Even unmoored from the passage above, the word itself has a Biblical tone. One can be afflicted by love and desire ...

  • BEAK>: Show Preview
Since the 1990s, band name punctuation has grown increasingly peculiar. Nowadays, monikers are enhanced by exclamation points (Against Me!), question marks (Why?), periods (fun.), and parentheses (Sunn O)))). BEAK> — an experimental electronica three-piece from Bristol, England, that...

Berlin-via-Bristol singer Anika teams up with Geoff Barrow once again for a cover of Chromatics’ 2007 single ‘In The City’. Anika’s 2010 debut on Stones Throw had plenty going for it: Portishead’s Barrow behind the decks; Barrow side gig BEAK> [...]

  • Anika covers Chromatics' 'In The City'
German-English singer-songwriter Anika , born Annika Henderson, may be relatively unknown, but her voice has character all its own. Henderson, who also worked as a journalist between Berlin and Bristol, was discovered several years back by Portishead member and producer Geoff Barrow , who enlisted her in his Beak> side-project. Her Kim Gordon -esque vocals are meant to sound distant and human, aching for more, as it does on her cover of the Chromatics Kill For Love cut 'In The City'. The cover, which is available below, will be featured on Henderson's upcoming EP, which is due out April 16th via ...

  • Anika: "In the City" (Chromatics cover)
Anika 's 2010 self-titled debut was awash in alienation, largely due to her wonderfully coarse vocal delivery. It's a feeling the Berlin/Bristol-based singer returns to on "In the City," a cover of a Chromatics song taken from her forthcoming EP out April 16 via Stones Throw . The cover continues Anika's fondness for monochromatic takes on other people's work, but shares a similar sense of late night reclusion that Johnny Jewel 's band got down to a fine art on last year's Kill for Love . The feeling of isolation is increased tenfold, largely due to the ...
