Amsterdam Introduction
In a Nutshell
Amsterdam was a major trade centre in the 17th century - its 'Golden Age', when merchants made fortunes by importing nutmeg and cinnamon from the Dutch East Indies. Today, the same gable-fronted warehouses line its network of concentric canals and the city is split into seven distinct areas. The Museum Quarter is home to the most extensive Van Gogh collection in the world, while the infamous Red Light District is characteristic of Amsterdam's tolerant disposition. Venture south of the centre to enjoy rose gardens and a maze in Amstelpark.
