Retrospective 2012: More than 500 thousand construction workers went on strike for better work conditions

In Brazil, it is estimated that more than 500,000 construction workers went on strike at construction sites in 2012. This information was released on “Evaluation of Strikes in construction sector in Brazil in 2012″ published by the National Federation of Construction Industry Workers – Fenatracop. The study points to the fact that most of the mobilizations were caused by wage inequalities and the claim for better working conditions. Among these workers, it is estimated that about 60% stopped their activities in the first half of the year. Dunas Arena: After a 2-day Strike, Workers Achieve a 12%Salary Increase

Natal city, Rio Grande do Norte state: the 1,500 workers that have been building the Dunas Arena paralyzed their activities on November 7th, demanding a 25% wage increase. On November 8th, workers demonstrated and, on the same day, they reached agreement on a 12% wage increase and, additionally, monthly food stamps valued at US$ 63.00. Brazil 2012: over 300,000 construction workers went on strike

According to the report [1] about the growing wave of mobilizations in the construction sector in Brazil, in the first semester of 2012 about 302,600 workers went on strike in 20 of the 27 states of the country. In addition, it is observed that 70% of these mobilizations took place in the North, Northeast and Midwest of the country where wages are around 30% lower compared to the other regions. Five workers were injured in an accident at Brasilia Stadium

Five workers were injured after an accident at Mane Garrincha stadium. The accident happened in the late afternoon on Monday when a concrete slab, that was about 15 meters high, crashed injuring five workers. One of these workers had a surgery because of a fractured leg. Arena Pantanal: workers achieve up to 12% wage increase

On July 25th, SINTRAICCCM, the union that represents  workers of the Arena Pantanal has announced an agreement with the Consortium Santa Barbara Mendes Jr. that will  be ratified on August 15th .  This agreement guaranteed not only a wage increase of up to 12% but also food stamps increase to USD 89  (which means an increase of  33%). As a reference, the bricklayer`s assistant base salary, is now US$ 397. BWI congratulates the workers and the union on  this achievement!   … Read entire article »

Official note on release of public resources for construction works

The trade unions, federations and confederations of workers  that are part of the National Permanent Negotiation Committee approved at a meeting held yesterday, July 25th , in Sao Paulo, that they will claim to the counsel of the Worker Support Fund, BNDES, Caixa Economica Federal (Federal Bank), and the Ministry of Cities, that adherence to the terms of “National Commitment to Improve Working Conditions in Construction Sector”  should be  considered as a condition for receiving  public resources in construction sectors, especially in cases of PAC, the project “My House My Life”, World Cup and the Olympics.
