What is BWI Connect?

Migration has become increasingly a significant issue for BWI affiliates irrespective of the regions as evident by the number of resolutions introduced at the 2nd BWI World Congress held in Lille, France leading to the inclusion of migration into the BWI 2010-2013 Strategic Plan.  With this political mandate, the BWI formulated the Global Migration Project, a new initiative to consolidate and coordinate the work of BWI and its affiliates on migration at the global level.  The project is in line with the three major components of BWI’s strategic plan of organizing, negotiating, and influencing policies.  One of the major components of the project is BWI CONNECT.

The crux of BWI CONNECT is organizing temporary migrant workers in BWI sectors into trade unions under the philosophy of “equal pay, benefits, conditions, and work hours for equal work” regardless of migration status.  With the overall goal of organizing migrant workers, BWI CONNECT will be formulated into three pillars:  Organizing, Policy Advocacy and Communications.  The success of BWI CONNECT is dependent upon the commitment and the will of BWI affiliates to develop and implement the three components of BWI CONNECT is a package, where each section is critical piece to a bigger jig saw puzzle for building a new, stronger, and dynamic trade union movement.
