The news media follow narratives when they report on campaigns because they want to make their coverage compelling. Campaigns feed narratives to reporters, pundits and supporters because they want to promote their story line.

Many business executives have come to believe that commitment to corporate social responsibility (CSR) can lead to a stronger reputation, which will protect a company during a crisis. It’s all about making deposits into the “bank of goodwill.” If a firm is responsive to stakeholders, generous with its philanthropy and committed to meeting community needs, it can gain the benefit of the doubt when confronting controversy.
