This is the first American hardcover edition of a masterpiece of contemporary science fiction which is considered by many to be the greatest single science fiction novel ever written. First and foremost it is the classic pyrotechnic science fiction novel, with a plot structured like a series of rapidly exploding firecrackers building to a brilliant and literally mind-blowing climax. The theme is that of a man who becomes superhuman in his desire for vengeance. Gulliver Foyle, the only surviving crew-member of a space ship in wartime manages to keep himself alive in space until he is finally sighted by a passing vehicle. The vehicle fails to stop, and Gulliver is transformed into a possessed genius/monster. He pursues his deserter. coming into conflict with the richest man in the solar system. the shrewdest police detective and the best-paid lawyer. Gulliver's chase gives him a special education in a society gone mad that will enable him to re-shape civilization after the war. Full of literary references to Rimbaud, Joyce, Blake and Swift, The Stars My Destination is not only a science fiction classic but a significant work of modern literature as well.

[We chose to use the later, significantly revised US text of the Signet edition (New York, 1957) rather than the earlier UK text of Tiger, Tiger. The four line poem from which the title of the US edition is taken is not, for instance, in the UK text. The Gregg edition was reprinted two or three times]

Karel Capek is one of the most important science fiction writers of the twentieth century, carrying on the legacy of Jules Verne and Edgar Allan Poe in his use of accurate scientific and technological detail, as well as adding the social dimension of H. G. Wells. He also has the distinction of introducing the word, "robot," into the language in his play "R.U.R" (Rossum's Universal Robots) written in the 1920s. Capek's novels are noteworthy for the strong satirical vein that underlies their "scientification" and nowhere is this more evident than in his best novel, War With the Newts. This dystopian satire involves the discovery of intelligent, humanoid Salamanders in the south seas, who are bred as workers and become slaves, but who develop their own fascist society and finally revolt, bringing about the downfall of civilization.

Edgar Allan Poe's Narrative of Arthur Gordon Pym, an imaginary voyage, is considered unfinished by some scholars and the Gregg Press Science Fiction Series includes the texts of two completions of it. This first one begins where Poe leaves off: Pym and his companion Peters have been propelled in their canoe by a strange current into a region of novelty and wonder on the Souther horizon. In A Strange Discovery, Peters, on his deathbed, recounts his adventures with Pym on the utopian island of Hili-li where they are befriended by the Hili-lites who are descendants of the fourth-century Romans. Pym falls in love with the exquisite Lilama but their romance is cut short by her death in a "strange thermal phenomenon". Pym and Peters are permitted to leave the island but Pym dies before he can return. Dake's novel is significant not only for its relation to Poe - it scientifically explains the elements Poe left to the supernatural - but also as a fine example of the "lost race" science fiction that grew out of the work of H. Rider Haggard at the end of the nineteenth century.

This early work of science fiction, first published in the collection Camperdown (1836), continues to retain its interest because Mary Griffith's utopian vision was uncannily accurate. She saw the direction American society in her time, found it good and considered the possibilities for progress from what we would now consider the point of view of a political liberal. In equating utopia with a better America, she used her knowledge of contemporary scientific developments to imagine a future capitalistic society. Her utopian America is a Christian society based on continued industrial and technological growth, supported by something very like a graduated income tax. The problems she deals with in Three Hundred Years Hence are as relevant now as they were in her day: small matters, such as the pollution by dogs in cities, and the larger social issues, such as religous freedom, racism and women's rights. The present edition is a facsimile reproduction of the 1950 Prime Press edition, with corrections and a new preface.

This is the first American edition of the earliest single-author collection of pulp magazine science fiction to appear in book form. When it was published in 1936, Edmond Hamilton's work was ten years ahead of its time. Not until after World War II did pulp-spawned science fiction begin to find the respectability that warranted hardcover editions. From the publication of the first issue of Amazing Stories by Hugo Gernsback in April 1926, the pulp science fiction writers began to blaze new trails in time and space, taking off from the science fiction giants of the nineteenth century, Jules Verne and H. G. Wells. The Horror of the Asteriod is a treasure chest of many of these trails. The title story tells of the experiences of survivors of a wrecked space ship on an asteriod. The Accursed Galaxy is a tale of alien forces enduring over billions of years. The Man Who Say Everthing and The Man Who Evolved are typical of the genius scientist stories of the period, and the "lost city" story is represented in The Monster-God of Mamurth. A quite unique idea for the time - that the earth has a brain - is presented in a extremely credible and chilling story, The Earth Brain, in which the explorer who discovers the geological intelligence in pursued around the world by earthquakes.

The Land of the Change Sun conforms in general to the conventions of the late 19th-century "lost race" novel, but is significant for its unique treatment of the form. The characteristic blend of science fiction themes -imaginary voyage, utopia and wonderful inventions - is used by Harben to advance his plot and render the narrative plausible, rather than to expound scientific theories, usually the case at the time. Harben's novel released science fiction from its didactic confines with a delightfully imaginative and exciting story. Two explorers marooned by a balloon accident on a barren island discover the underground civilization of the Alphans which is full of scientific and cultural wonders, including a mechanical sun that changes color every hour. One of the explorers is exiled, and the twists and turns of the plot involve his escape attempts and the efforts of his companion and the Alphan king's daughter to rescue him. The climax occurs when a subterranean lake spills over into an air vent, making the destruction of the Alphan civilization inevitable.
