Pussy Riot Brings Meaning To Music Protest

August 17, 2012 By Temple Leave a Comment

The Trayvon Martin case triggered something in me about the quality and uselessness of protest music in the 2010s. AS if the incident itself wasn’t horrible enough, musicians seemed to want to add another level of tragic to the incident

Over the last week, as Devo embarrasses itself creating a song about Mitt Romney’s dog and Megadeth’s Dave Mustaine mouthing off about Obama directly involved in the Aurora movie theater shootings – well, politics and music ain’t what it used to be,

So it’s some kind of weird circle of awkward that brings the actions of a Cold War opponent to the forefront of music actually, again, being an agent of change. The women in the punk band Pussy Riot were each sentenced on a count of hooliganism to two years of jail time for singing a 1-minute anti-Putin prayer song in a church in Moscow, Russia. Vladamir Putin was just re-elected to the presidency after taking some time off to .. hold the post of Prime Minister.

Here are the lyrics to Pussy Riot’s prayer song, Virgin Mary, Put Putin Away:

Virgin Mary, Mother of God, put Putin away
Рut Putin away, put Putin away

Black robe, golden epaulettes
All parishioners crawl to bow
The phantom of liberty is in heaven
Gay-pride sent to Siberia in chains

The head of the KGB, their chief saint,
Leads protesters to prison under escort
In order not to offend His Holiness
Women must give birth and love

Shit, shit, the Lord’s shit!
Shit, shit, the Lord’s shit!

Virgin Mary, Mother of God, become a feminist
Become a feminist, become a feminist

The Church’s praise of rotten dictators
The cross-bearer procession of black limousines
A teacher-preacher will meet you at school
Go to class – bring him money!

Patriarch Gundyaev believes in Putin
Bitch, better believe in God instead
The belt of the Virgin can’t replace mass-meetings
Mary, Mother of God, is with us in protest!

Virgin Mary, Mother of God, put Putin away
Рut Putin away, put Putin away

The performance group rocked their song February 21 at the Christ the Savior Cathedral before the seen-as-inevitable Putin re-election. There’s confusion about whether the convictions are based more on blasphemy or were hurt by the politics. The poin5t is, guess what, this shit mattered. Fighting the powers has become weak in America because truly, in many areas, there’s nothing left to hang on to. Not really. Evidence Exhibit 1 – Devo!
