Many people think that Fort Derne in Libya was the first place that an American Flag was flown over a foreign fort: on the shores of Tripoli. Actually, it was raised over Fort Nassau, in the Bahamas, in 1778 during the Revolutionary War.

Flag Etiquette

The American Flag should never be dipped or lowered in respect to another flag except in 1 situation. According to US Navy regulations, Navy ships dip it in response to dips from foreign vessels.
